MINUTES LATER, they were in Em’s bed, buried under the blankets, legs tangled together. Arousal still pulsed between them, and they couldn’t seem to keep their hands off each other’s skin, but the mad rush inspired by that first kiss had faded. They took their time, learning and exploring, discovering the places that made the other squirm. The conversation was lost to their desire for each other, and when Surya finally eased himself into Em in slow, short thrusts, it was nothing like fucking and everything like making love.

Afterward, they talked, their voices low and intimate in the near darkness of the room. Em learned that Surya had been feeling the same way he had for weeks—months.

“Almost from the very first,” Surya whispered, “though it terrified me at the time. But that night in London, I’d planned to apologize to you in the morning, see if we could give the whole thing a go and see where it led. I was an idiot in Barcelona. I’m sorry for that, Em.”

Em shook his head. “It’s okay. You’ve already apologized for that. It’s water under the bridge as far as I’m concerned. You have to know by now my feelings never went away.”

Surya squeezed him hard, his lips brushing Em’s temple. “Mine either. All these weeks I’ve wanted to say something so much. Or kiss you. God, I’ve wanted to kiss you.” Surya chuckled lowly.

“And you know I regret that morning in London,” Em said. “I didn’t want to be hurt again. I thought if I acted first, kept it casual, it would be easier. But all it did was make things worse between us.”

“Well, it’s over now, isn’t it?”

Surya skimmed his fingers up Em’s spine, and Em shivered at the touch, nuzzling his face into the crook where Surya’s neck met his shoulder.

“Yeah, it’s over.” Em smiled into Surya’s skin.

“But I have to ask you for something.”

“What?” Em asked sleepily. With his after-sex buzz fading, the exhaustion of the last few days was finally catching up with him. All he wanted to do was drift.

“Time,” Surya answered. “In public, I’d like for us to keep on as we have been—at least until I can figure out a way to tell my family.”

Em couldn’t prevent himself from stiffening at those words, thoughts of sleep fleeing his mind as quickly as they’d come. He pulled back so he could look into Surya’s face, search his eyes. Surya looked sincere, but Em didn’t like the idea of hiding their relationship. They’d already been keeping secrets from their friends for over a year. “Surya….”

“We can tell everyone else. Jess, Shane, whoever else would keep it quiet.” Surya grabbed one of Em’s hands and threaded their fingers together, his expression earnest. “I just…. My parents aren’t going to understand. My mother already worries about me being considered gay by association because I hang out with you and Shane and Jesse, and now Nick too. We’ve fought about it more than once. You know that. Appearances are very important to my family.
